friday (september 2026)i was at the store today. call it nostalgia, but i decided that i wanted to get the same body lotion we had shared earlier this summer. my memory is terrible but some moments, like these, are so clear: the two of us had just gotten out of the shower, huge glass windows showing off all of downtown and the sun melting into the skyline. they sat down next to me in the other room and cupped my face in their hands, slathered with the lotion. i said it smelled like cake batter. they laughed and said people said that all the time, and i smiled, because it meant that other people knew just how pleasant it was.

saturday (september 2026)i saw the guy who i met a couple months ago. i knew it was him cause he had the same sign on the ground next to him, but he was under a blanket. i walked a block past him and knew i would feel bad for the rest of the night if i didn’t do something so i took all the money out of my wallet and slipped it under his blanket. i heard him shuffle so i assume he woke up and grabbed it but i left too quick to find out. i walked away and cried anyway. funny how that works. smells like fall again.
